Structural Steel Fabrication in Cairns

Structural steel detailed, fabricated and erected on site — QBCC-licensed, welded to AS/NZS 1554, and lifted into place with cranage. We build the steel and stand it up.

Cairns Structural Steel Fabrication

SAE Engineering fabricates and erects structural steel across Cairns, the Tablelands and Far North Queensland. As a QBCC-licensed contractor welding to AS/NZS 1554, we take a job from shop detailing through fabrication to crane-lift erection on site — including very large lifts, done mostly in the field.

Portal frames, industrial sheds, platforms, mezzanines and support structures in structural and mild steel — built to the drawings, plumbed and levelled, bolted or welded up on site. We work in with your engineer, builder and site supervisor to keep the program moving and the steel compliant.

The real difference is what happens after the steel is up: we also build and program the control and automation that runs the plant inside it. One accountable engineer, from footings to fully commissioned. Send through your drawings for a quote.

Our Structural Steel Erection Process

01

Site & Access Assessment

We walk the site, confirm access and set up for cranage and material handling before a single beam leaves the shop.

02

Delivery & Staging

Fabricated steel arrives in erection sequence and is staged for safe, efficient lifting — no double-handling.

03

Structural Steel Placement

Cranes and rigging position each member to the engineering drawings, plumbed and levelled as it goes up.

04

Connection & Bracing

Members are bolted or welded off to AS/NZS 1554, with temporary bracing holding the frame stable until it's tied in.

05

Final Checks & Sign-Off

We check alignment, complete the inspection and hand over the documentation the certifier and builder need.

06

Industrial Sheds

Portal-frame sheds and workshops supplied and erected — engineered for Far North Queensland conditions and built to last.

Frequently Asked Questions

How early should I contact a structural steel fabricator?

As early as you can — ideally at design or detailing stage. Bring us in early and we'll flag cost, access and crane-lift issues before they're locked into the drawings, and plan around steel lead times. Early involvement means less rework and a tighter erection program.

Is bolt-up or weld-in better for my structure?

It depends on the structure, the site and the timeline. Bolt-up is faster to erect and easier on remote or tight-access sites; welded connections give more strength and a cleaner finish but need more site prep. We weld to AS/NZS 1554 either way, and we'll tell you straight which suits your job.

Can structural steel be reused or modified later?

Yes, if it's designed for it. Bolted structures come apart and repurpose easily; welded systems take more work. Want future adaptability? Say so at design stage and we'll build it in — that's the advantage of the engineer who draws it also being the one who builds it.
